Victor Davis Hanson on the myth of Obama

Victor Davis Hanson is courageous enough in this piece to tackle head-on all the claims of Obama's "brilliance". I've always thought that was suspect. If he was such a phenomenal scholar then why won't he let his college transcripts be released?

I like also this line:
"We were to think that the obsessions with the NBA, the NCAA final four, the golfing tics, etc., were all respites from exhausting labors of the mind rather than in fact the presidency respites from all the former."

Choosing Ideology over Sound Science

Senators Inhofe and Vitter and Rep. Darrell Issa sent a letter to White House science advisor John Holdren citing four specific incidents where liberal ideology trumped sound scientific practice. So much for the Obama administration restoring science to "it's rightful place". I guess that to Obama and his appointees that "rightful place" is in advancing liberal causes.

The Left is more anti-science than the Right

I love this post that lays out a number of arguments about how the Left is actually more anti-science than the Right. I especially like the response to this criticism:

"Let’s take the first one. Mooney says: “On the left, we eat alive our own allies when they make false claims. That’s precisely what happened on vaccines and autism.” This is actually comedy-club material when you consider that the Left still worships at the altars of Rachel Carson, Paul Ehrlich, Al Gore, and David Suzuki, who have declared the End of Days virtually every day for 40 years now. White House Science Advisor John Holdren is infamous for his extreme doomsday views and solutions, while Gore, who has a climate-footprint larger than some entire countries, just held a Climaggedon Telethon and still gets around $150K per speech from Left-leaning audiences pining for his non-existent presidency."

Psst! New evidence against man-made global warming

Interesting recap here on some results from CERN that indicate that cosmic ray activity could influence the fraction of global cloud formation and thus have a climatic impact. The chief of the lab doesn't want any of his people to draw any inferences from their results though... Heaven forbid.

China developing Electromagnetic Pulse weapons

This article describes Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) weapons being developed by China for use against... hmmm, who would they use them against? The Mongolians... nooo. The Tibetans? No. Of course the primary enemy that they're developing them to use against is the U.S. We ignore this threat at the risk of our ultimate peril.

Climate Scientist James Hansen: All about the science or the money?

This is an interesting story. Dr. James Hansen of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies who became a bit of a celebrity with all his scare talk about global warming has made himself a millionaire off of his alarmism.

Victor Davis Hanson on the death of Bin Laden

Victor Davis Hanson has a good post on the Corner about the death of Bin Laden. He is rather upbeat, noting that radical Islam has been weakened in recent years. I hope he is right.

Chinese space station plans unveiled

The Chinese have unveiled a scale model of their proposed Tiangong-1 space station. Apparently they recognize what the U.S. has forgotten... that a strong space program is a vital component of a world leading nation.

Muslim science teacher has to retract statements on evolution

A science lecturer at Middlesex University in England who has written that Darwin's theory of evolution was not incompatible with the teaching of Islam has had to retract that statement after having death threats issued against him. Once again the "religion of peace" shows its true face. And science teachers in the U.S. think they have it tough with Christian fundamentalists...

the "civility" of Wisconsin Democrats

After the late night vote to strip collective bargaining powers from the teachers' union last week, Wisconsin Democrat assemblyman Gordon Hintz shouted "You're f------ dead!" at freshman Republican assemblywoman Michelle Litjens. The hypocrisy of Democrats in lecturing Republicans on "civility" is amazing.  Hintz should be drummed out of office. Story here.

more rare earth elements to be mined in the U.S.

Finally some good news on the mineral production front. A story here about how Molycorp has reopened the Mountain Pass mine right on the California/Nevada border. This is good news since China has a virtual monopoly on rare earth elements and has been flouting that near monopoly. That is bad news for the world, but finally some good news from the Mountain Pass mine.

The case for defunding NPR

I will, on the odd occasion, listen to NPR. Hey, I like their Science Friday segment, but I absolutely think it should be defunded by the Federal government. In this article, a fan of NPR and public TV makes the case for cutting the cord of Federal dollars.

Leaders of UK, France and Germany all say multiculturalism has failed

Yesterday French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that "... clearly yes, it is a failure" where the "it" referred to multiculturalism. The other "big 3" European leaders, David Cameron of Britain and Angela Merkel have also said that experiments in their respective cultures in multiculturalism have failed. When will the Democrats in the U.S. realize this? Why can't they look at the coins in their pockets and see that the solution is "E Pluribus Unum" - out of many - one.

Number of global warming skeptics doubles in the UK

This article reports on findings that the number of people in the UK who are skeptical about global warming has doubled in the last four years. Maybe there is some hope for the Brits after all...

Journalistic irresponsibility with regards to the Giffords shooting

There's a good post here at American Spectator about how journalists used the event of the tragic shooting in Arizona of Congresswoman Giffords with Sarah Palin and the Tea Party. One of my leftie friends on Facebook was also trying to make that association. As the American Spectator piece points out, there is no association whatsoever between the shooter and the Tea Party. If anything, the guy might have been something of a liberal as pointed out in the article in a citation of a Twitter exchange with one of the shooter's classmates:

"One of Loughner's classmates in high school and community college, Caitie Parker, voided much of the baseless media speculation with a few Twitter messages Saturday afternoon. Parker, herself a liberal, said Loughner was "a really good friend," whom she described as having been "left wing," "a political radical" and "quite liberal" when she knew him, although she lost touch with him after 2007 when he "became very reclusive." Loughner was a "loner" and a "pot head," Parker said in a Twitter colloquy with Anthony De Rosa of Reuters."

Even liberal journalist Howie Kurtz has pointed out that there is no basis for trying to pin any responsibility on Sarah Palin.
